How to communicate your passion

For those of you in the know, Ampliphi Media has been in the midst of a remodel lately, and coming out with programs and products to help businesses everywhere create an effective and compelling video marketing strategy. But first things first, of course.  And the first thing for us, is helping people communicate not just their vision, but their passion.

Thecommich has been fortunate enough to have a job that helps people do this. Through The Filipino Channel, I’ve been able to shine a spotlight on my countrymen being awesome in the international scene. Through Ampliphi Media, entrepreneurs and businesses of all shapes and sizes have had the opportunity to talk about why they love what they do.

Even though most entrepreneurs are passionate about their business, they sometimes get stuck in transmitting that emotion to their audience. Most of the time, I find it’s because they focus too much on appearing “professional,” which leads to conversations about how their process works, or what their training was like, or other minutiae and technical jargon.

To quote Gloria Estefan, “the words get in the way.” And yes, I know I just dated myself there.

Sometimes we forget that our personalities are 100x more magnetic than our credentials! And that’s a shame, because the best marketing always comes from an authentic core, i.e. who you really are.

What are the talking points audiences connect with? Which parts of your (probably long) story are compelling? What can you say that will not just explain WHAT or HOW you do what you do – but WHY you are the best person to do it?

Here are some questions that I go over with my clients to help them get clear on their passion, and communicate this effectively. Feel free to use them for talking points, interview questions, whatever. A gift from thecommich to you!

When did you realize you were good at this? (THIS, of course, meaning the service that you do or product you create)

What sacrifices have you made in order to run this business/be where you are now?

What motivates you to get up in the morning and do the work?

What is the most gratifying part of your job?

Why did you choose this business instead of a regular 9-5?

Did you always know you would do this for a living? Was there a plan B?

How does your passion for your work manifest itself in the day to day? Do you research on your competition? Do you have rituals you do to stay engaged and motivated?

How do you deal when you encounter the inevitable lows?

Do you have more questions you would add to this list? Share them with everyone else in the comment section below!
